Pet Passports

26 January 2008
Starting from October 2004 every owner of dogs, cats and ferrets needs a so-called pet passport filled in by the veterinarian in order to travel to EU countries together with his pet. This passport has to contain the last vaccination against rabies (special regulations apply to Sweden, Ireland and the United Kingdom)
A microchip (transponder), which will be established by the European member states within the coming 8 years, will enable an unproblematic identification and assignation to the pet passport. During that state of transition it is also permitted to tattoo the pet for identification (except for Ireland and the United Kingdom as it is already the obligation of wearing a transponder in these countries!) According to the new regulations all EU member states have to permit the stay of pets with a legal pet passport since the 3rd July 2003. In addition to that all present entry regulations will be valid, which means that most Eropeans countries at least demand a pet`s vaccination against rabies has to be least 30 days old but may not be older than 1 year. Further information will be found on the official homepage of the EU .
